Coloring is a wonderful way for children to learn fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are the skills that help the children learn how to write, grasp objects, and fasten things such as buttons on clothing. Having weak fine motor skills affect a child's ability to eat, write legibly, and perform certain tasks such as dressing.
Studies have found that coloring helps many children to overcome inner pain they may be experiencing from the death of a loved one, such as a family member or a pet. Many people do not think children will remember the death of loved ones, but it has been shown that they do indeed remember the loss of their loved ones and it can impact them later in life if it is not dealt with. Giving your child a piece of paper and coloring tools will help them express their inner feelings, even if they don't want to talk about them.
It is important to spend time coloring and drawing with your child as it teaches fine motor coordination. Markers, crayons, colored pencils, pens, and chalk can all be used as you teach your child how to draw. Allow an area on your driveway or patio where your child can use sidewalk chalk and draw different scenes. During your child's bath time, you can have your child draw with crayon soap. There are also other drawing games you can purchase for your child to use in the bathtub.
Developing fine motor skills is an important phase during early childhood development. Fine motor skills also goes along with hand-eye coordination so coloring and other activities focus on developing them. A great way to help your child learn fine motor skills is have them build puzzles. It is best to start with small-sized puzzles with six or seven pieces. As your child's skills begin to improve, you can start moving up the number of pieces in the puzzle. A good idea you can try is to have the child create the puzzle too. Use different pieces of construction paper and glue them together so you have a mix. The construction paper can then be cut so you get multiple sized pieces that can be used to build the puzzle. This way they will learn how to build puzzles and use their skills to learn how to identify color.
Another great activity you can do with your child is to use peg games. Peg games help your child learn hand-eye coordination and properly identify colors. Any activity that focuses on having the child learn how to construct things will also help develop their fine motor skills. K-NEX and other building blocks are wonderful tools for building upon their fine motor skills.
Try to have your child perform a coloring activity at least once a day for thirty minutes. Sitting down and coloring will help them identify shapes, identify colors, and develop other cognitive skills that they will need. Don't force your child to do anything they do not want to do because they may become discouraged.
Initially your child may need some encouragement, but they will be able to perform the activity on their own once they have developed an interest in the coloring activity. As your child grows, the fine motor skills will develop naturally, but it doesn't hurt to help them work on their skills every day. Time is the best way to help your child develop their skills. If you push them too hard, they will lose interest and will become discouraged quickly. Always allow your child to come to you for help instead of telling them what they need to do.
